How To Fix An IPhone Hotspot That’s Not Working

Turn Cellular Data Off And Back On

Our iPhones actually use our cellular data to create a working Hotspot network. As with many tech devices, when they act funny, it doesn’t hurt to give them a quick flip on and off. This can help reset the network and just overall refresh everything to flush out any possible minor glitches or bugs. So as a first step in trying to troubleshoot your Hotspot troubles, we recommend turning your cellular data off and then back on.

To turn your data on and off, first you’ll need to open your Settings menu. Next, scroll to Cellular. Find the Cellular Data switch. Toggle the switch OFF, then back ON again.

Find the Personal Hotspot option; it’ll be below the Cellular Data toggle. Ensure that the Personal Hotspot switch is also flipped ON.Hopefully, this quick trick will get everything back up and moving again. If not, it’s time to proceed to the next step.

Restart Your iPhone

It’s likely you may have already taken this step, but if you have not we highly recommend doing so. As mentioned above sometimes a good ol’ refresh can do so much for a device that isn’t performing up to par – such as a Hotspot that doesn’t want to work. Many of us nearly never fully power-down our phones, leaving them running for days, and even months on end. Turning your iPhone completely off and then back on again often give it just the kick it needs to be back up and running properly.

To power off your phone, simply hold down the Power button until the toggle menu appears and you see “Slide to Power Off.” Once your iPhone is fully shut down, wait a few moments and then press and hold the Powerbutton once more to turn your iPhone back on.

Check For Carrier Settings Update

Many times when we encounter a problem with our devices, especially iPhones, it is due to a missing update. While we are all pretty familiar with iOS updates, a lot of people are unaware that your wireless carrier also releases updates as well. A missed wireless carrier update may possibly be the source of your Hotspot problem.

To check and see if your iPhone has the latest Carrier Settings Update: first, open your Settingsmenu, then select General. Now select About. On this screen, you will see a prompt to update your carrier settings if an update is available. If a prompt does not appear then your phone’s carrier settings are fully updated and you can move to the next troubleshooting step.

Update iOS On Your iPhone

The next step in troubleshooting your broken Hotspot is checking to make sure your iPhone has the latest iOS update. We’ve been there; when your iPhone always seems to ask if you want to install the latest update right when we’re in the middle of something. Before you know it, you’re a few updates behind; and your devices show it.

While it’s a common issue, missed iOS updates can contribute to a whole array of issues, glitches, and bugs. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that your phone is up-to-date with the latest iOS software.

To check and see if your device has the latest iOS software update, Open the General Settings menu on your iPhone. Then, select Software Update. If there is an available update you will see a red indicator with a number. Try installing the missed update and see if this resolves your Hotspot issues.

Reset Your iPhone’s Network Settings

So, now that we’ve ruled out missed updates and minor software glitches that can often be solved with a quick reboot we can now move on to more involved home remedies for your broken Hotspot. The next option is to try resetting your iPhone’s network settings. Your network settings include all of your iPhone’s connectivity paths, such as Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, etc. With this step, we’re placing your network settings back to its factory default mode.

To reset your iPhone’s network settings, the steps are simple. First, open your Settings menu. Select General, then Reset Network Settings. Confirm that you are choosing to reset your network settings. Once your phone has restarted, your network settings have been reset successfully.

Put Your iPhone In DFU Mode

DFU Mode stands for Direct Firmware Update mode. This is a very intense update, so we highly recommend attempting all the steps outlined above before moving on to this one.
